Director of PROMES (Processes Materials and Solar Energy Laboratory), France Composite and nanostructured materials in concentrated solar thermal energy technologies

Abstract - Concentrated solar thermal energy technologies convert linear or point focused solar radiation into medium and high temperature heat that is further used in thermal, thermodynamic and chemical systems to produce process heat, electricity and chemicals respectively. These technologies involve similar components used in the main sub-systems, namely the concentrator, the absorber/receiver, the storage and the energy conversion device.

This conference will present examples of composite and nanostructured materials use in the above mentioned sub-systems:

  • Concentrator: sandwich mirrors and reflectors;

  • Solar receiver: nanostructured selective coatings;

  • Storage: composite materials for heat performance improvement;

  • Energy conversion device: nanopowders for producing hydrogen or syngas using redox cycles.

The presentation will emphasize the main advantages of selected composite and nanostructured materials.
