SEAWORK 2013

Seawork international maritime exhibition Southampton 2013

BUMPER YEAR JULY 9 2013

Seawork 2013 attracted record numbers of commercial marine professionals with over 7,300 visitors this year, a 6% increase on 2012.

Visitors to the exhibition held at the ABP Port of Southampton from June 25 to 27 were drawn in by the lure of new products, new vessels on the pontoons, demonstrations on-the-water and the conference papers from organisations including the Ministry of Defence, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and the Navitus Bay Wind Park development.

Highlights of Seawork 2013 included: the sale of three vessels by Netherlands based Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, including a 27m Shoalbuster off the pontoons; the sale of a multi-role, road transportable workboat by Meercat Workboats of the UK to a Tasmanian fish farm and the announcement by the UK's Ocean Safety of Southampton of the agreement to replace all the liferafts used by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The dates for Seawork 2014 have been confirmed as Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 June.

Spirit of Innovation Seawork Trophy 2013

INNOVATION AWARDS JUNE 26 2013

The Seawork Innovation Awards were presented last night by BBC TV’s Sally Taylor at the new-format networking event, sponsored by ZF Marine, at The Grand Café. The prestigious Spirit of Innovation Trophy was presented to Filtertechnik for its Particle Pal, a self-contained, battery operated field kit that passes oil or fuel through a laser particle counter. The Seawork Innovation Awards, were sponsored by Class Instrumentation.

Guy Cotten UK won the Marine Equipment category in the Innovations Showcase for its new Drempro Jacket and Drembib Trousers made from bonding high-tech, multi-layered fabric to hard-wearing PVC-coated material – a revolutionary manufacturing process.

The award in the Safety category went to NRG Marine for its PFE range of fire extinguishers, the world’s first non-pressurised, multi-purpose extinguisher. USA exhibitor, Maretron, was awarded a Special Commendation for its Vessel Data Recorder.

The Seawork Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Norman Finley, lifetime president of the National Workboat Association, who was instrumental in setting up the association and played a key role in developing the Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s Workboat Code of Practice and the Brown Code, launched at Seawork.

The category winners were as follows:

Propulsion: Filtertechnik

Marine Equipment: Guy Cotten UK – Drempro Jacket & Drembib Trousers

Safety: NRG Marine – PFE 1/2/3 range of Fire Extinguishers

Special commendation to Maretron for its Vessel Data Recorder.

The Seawork Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Norman Finlay.

Sally Taylor introduced the Seawork Lifetime Achievement Award and commented: “(Mr Finlay) was instrumental in forming the National Workboat Association in 1994 and the DOT/MCA Workboat Code of Practice, which came into force in 1997."

“He has continued to lobby for the very specific needs of a Workboat Code of Practice which is now the Brown Code, launched by the MCA at Seawork.”

2013 sees a stronger than ever Ministry of Defence presence at Seawork. Not only is the revamped MoD Boats Team holding its annual Industry forum, but they will be joined by specialist colleagues in boat engineering and safety.
At 1400 on Tuesday 25 June, the newly-formed Ministry of Defence Marine Specialist Service will hold its inaugural meeting at Seawork, as the venue provides an excellent, broader maritime context in which to consider and select the Services’ future requirements.

Introduced by Captain Phil Buckley, the meeting, which is for invited attendees only, will be chaired by its Director – Commodore Bill Walworth CBE RFA – and will be attended by Rear Admiral Ian Jess, who will also be visiting selected stands and demonstrations at Seawork.

Admiral Jess is the Director of the Naval Base Operating Centre within the Maritime Domain in DE&S and has recently assumed the new role of ACNS (Support) within Navy Command.

In addition, the manager of the MoD New Suppliers service will be holding a number of one-to-one meetings with companies interested in doing business with the MoD but outside the scope of the Boats Team. He will be on the UKTI stand with its Small Business Unit, which helps SME`s develop export business and is at Seawork to meet exhibitors and visitors trying to establish export markets.

The UKTI Small Business Unit and the MoD New Suppliers Manager will be giving presentations in Conference Room 2 on Thursday 27 June at 1000 and 1100 respectively. If you have interests with MoD business and/or exporting, visit the MoD on Stand 199 and/or the UKTI Pavilion.
